About Wuhan University
Wuhan University, located by the beautiful Luojia Mountain in the city of Wuhan, is a comprehensive and key national university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China. Its history can be traced back to Ziqiang Institute, which was founded in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong, then governor of Hubei Province and Hunan Province in the late Qing Dynasty. In the process of development and evolution, the institute changed its name for several times before it was finally named National Wuhan University in 1928 and became one of the earliest national universities in modern China.
Wuhan University is a comprehensive institution covering a whole range of disciplines with unique features. It is one of the best universities with particular achievements of education in China. In 1999, the world-renowned journal Science regarded Wuhan University as one of the most prominent Chinese institutions of higher education. In 2011, Wuhan University is among the 10 Chinese universities listed by The Times as top 400 universities in the world. For the past century, Wuhan University has built an elegant palatial architectural complex of primitive simplicity which blends perfectly the eastern architectural style with that of the west. Therefore, it is honored as the “Most Beautiful University in China.”
The prominence of education has won Wuhan University world-wide reputation and booming international exchanges and cooperation in recent years. It has established cooperative relationship with more than 370 universities and research institutes in over 44 countries and regions.
Wuhan University is one of the first Chinese universities which started admitting international students from 1950’s. In more than 50 years it has educated nearly 10,000 international students from over 110 countries and regions. Currently, international students have wide choices from undergraduate, master and Ph.D. degree programs and other advanced study programs in liberal arts, sciences and medicine, as well as Chinese language training programs. Among them, the economics and management, software engineering, medicine and international law programs are taught in English.
The School of International Education is a special school that provide education to international students. It is responsible for not only the admissions and daily management of those students but also Chinese language teaching and research. It is also one of the first certified Chinese Language Training Centers and HSK Test Centers by the government.
Now the School has 40 full-time teachers of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, most of whom have rich experience of teaching abroad. It provides bachelor’s program of Chinese language and other short-term and long-term language training programs. In 2012 new teaching & administration building and student dormitories started construction and it is now in function and providing first-rate teaching and living facilities for international students studying at Wuhan University.
