United Nations ESCAP to Sponsor for Higher Education of ASEAN Students under the Sirindhorn Center for Geo-informatics (SCGI) Master Program

Capacity Development is the core of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)’s technical cooperation programme. The main objective of their capacity development work is to develop the technical, managerial and institutional capacities of member and associate member governments to plan and deliver more effective policies and programmes in support of inclusive and sustainable development. Therefore, ESCAP has come forward to sponsor ASEAN Students under the Sirindhorn Center for Geo-informatics (SCGI) Master Program. ESCAP has offered to sponsor four (4) ASEAN Students funds for traveling to China to pursue their education in Wuhan University.

United Nation ESCAP’s capacity development prpogramme falls right in position with Geo-informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Public Organization) (GISTDA)’s SCGI training center. Sirindhorn Center for Geo-Informatics (SCGI) is serving as the international center on research and technology transfer in space technology and geo-informatics. Both organisations feel the importance to strengthen the human capital in Thailand and ASEAN by promoting inclusive and equitable quality education as well as stimulate lifelong learning opportunities. Under the SCGI center – Geo-information and Space Technology Development Agency (Public Organization) (GISTDA) under the Ministry of Higher Education Science Research and Innovation, Thailand, Wuhan University in China and Burapha University in Thailand together have introduced the SCGI Master Program curriculum, which is an international Master’s Degree – Double degree program. Students under this curriculum would get to pursue their Master’s Degree in two countries: Thailand and China, within 2 years of study period. Graduates would receive their degree from both renowned universities: Wuhan University and Burapha University.  Apart from this, graduates who would have completed from this program would gain knowledge in the field of science, geography, social studies and space technology and other areas. By which, graduates could pursue their career as scientists, researchers, lecturers in the field of Geo-informatics at an ASEAN or International level.

SCGI Master Program not only focuses on the development of Thai nationals but also aims at providing ASEAN citizens an opportunity to develop in the field of Geo-informatics and Space Technology in the region. GISTDA appreciates the support that United Nations ESCAP has provided and is looking to work and collaborate together to foster education and improve the quality of life of the people in Thailand and the ASEAN region.

GISTDA officials visit to the embassy of the People’s Republic of China

11 June 2019, 10.00 a.m. Dr. Damrongrit Niamnuad, Acting Rector of Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) Academy, and GISTDA delegates meet with Ms. Song Ruo Yun, First Secretary, Education Office at the Embassy of People’s Republic of China in Bangkok. The purpose of this visit is to extend educational collaboration and network with China on space and geo-informatics technology. This meeting also introduces Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) and Sirindhorn Center for Geo-Informatics (SCGI) and SCGI Master Program and discusses the opportunities of funding sources to support education and capacity building for ASEAN countires.

FIELD TRIP FOR SCGI MASTER PROGRAM STUDENTS

The SCGI Master Program organized a field trip to enhance the use of technology and new knowledge developed on the field. The students travelled to Chonburi, Chachoengsao, Rayong and Prachinburi to experience techniques and skills for physical and social science data collection, field validation and survey methodology on the integration of Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System and Satellite Navigation applications. The objective is to educate students and to understand the problems of management and utilization of natural resources, focusing on the application of technology in areas like soil, forest, water, mineral, human, natural energy and economy. Extra-Curricular Activities Conducted by SCGI Master Program Students

Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Public Organization) (GISTDA): As the state agency, is responsible for driving the application of space technology and geo-informatics for the development of the country, we recognize the importance of creating the imagination and skills needed for the younger generation. GISTDA supports the creation of Space innovation for the future development of the country and therefore once again organized the 2nd Thailand Aerospace Youth Forum on 14th September 2018 at Space Krenovation Park in Chonburi. This is one of the means to strengthen the ability of Thai people to be ready to use space technology for maximum benefit.

Thailand Aerospace Youth Forum (TAYF) is a platform for the youth of the country to share knowledge and ideas. This program includes presentations from the development and application of unmanned aerospace technology and geo-spatial technology to enhance the skills needed for learning in the 21st century, combining STEM learning with a variety of activities. The participants did not only gain experience in modern technology but also got guidance from experts in the field. The youth remained inspired by experimenting activities that involved technology development skills, these skills could then continue to innovate towards commercialism and help become quality personnel that will benefit the nation in the future.

The SCGI Master Program students helped facilitate the event by taking responsibilities of demonstrating activities with the students and conducting inspired talks on various topics. The activities that were conducted are STEM Drone Projects, Drone Coding and Drone Mapping Workshop, Space Maker Workshop, Aircraft Design Workshop, Aircraft traffic control workshop at SOAR Lab and GALAXI Lab Workshop.
